Indigenous Perspectives on Happiness: Insights from Indian Traditions

G Misra, NM Pandey, V Mishra - Emotions in Cultural Context, 2024
While the quest for happiness has been a perennial global concern, it’s meaning and ways to pursue it differ widely. The traditional Indian worldview situates human life on a broader spectrum of conditions encompassing physical, psycho-social, and spiritual modes of existence. According to this dynamic process, model happiness is achieving liberation from suffering. This Dharma-centric view considers the limits of the material world and treats regulating the ego and its attachments as an inevitable challenge. It aspires to seek mental peace and harmonious co-existence with other beings be they creatures, nature, or the environment. Thus, happiness incorporates optimism, the absence of illness, a sense of wellness, and securing the well-being of others. Pursuing happiness involves renunciation as well as self-control. An endeavor is made to maintain equanimity, accept positive and negative events, and engage in activities that constitute the pattern of a happy life. Mindful self-regulation is the key to the pursuit of happiness... Bhagavad Gītā also maintains that samatva is yoga (Samatvam yoga uchyate). Instead of positivity, as emphasized in positive psychology, the Indian approach maintains that the balance (Sańtulan) of positive and negative is important as both …

Lajja: The Missing “Basic” Emotion in the Natya Shastra and What That Tells Us About the Hindu Moral Code

U Menon - Emotions in Cultural Context, 2024
This chapter explores the relationship between moral codes and emotional functioning in Hindu India. It examines both the rasa theory and its model of moral development as presented in Natya Shastra, the ancient and seminal treatise on dramaturgy and the arts, as well as the experience of the moral emotion lajja. Noting that the rasa theory does not include lajja in its list of basic emotions, the chapter attempts to provide a plausible explanation for this omission. It suggests that lajja’s absence illustrates the uneasy yet enduring tension that exists within the Hindu worldview between the two equally valid moral goals of dharma or world-affirmation, and moksa or world-renunciation, with lajja lying squarely within the temporal world, while the Natya Shastra points its readers toward moksa and Ultimate Reality... Rarely do they speak of moksa, fully aware that to even to talk of aspiring to achieve it signals desire and attachment, values that are antithetical to and undermine the very project of moksa.
